Creata dal regista Frank Darabont, la serie è basata sull'omonima serie a fumetti scritta da Robert Kirkman e
illustrata da Tony Moore e Charlie Adlard[1]. Rispetto al fumetto, di cui comunque vengono seguite le linee guida a
livello di trama, Darabont ha affermato che la serie presenta parecchie novità nella storia, sia con l'introduzione
di alcuni personaggi inediti sia con l'ampliamento della trama di ogni episodio che saltuariamente sfrutterà un
sistema di flashback per raccontare gli eventi passati dei vari protagonisti.

In un mondo post apocalittico gli
zombie hanno invaso il pianeta. In seguito a ciò, un gruppo variegato di sopravvissuti cerca disperatamente un luogo
sicuro dove stabilirsi. I superstiti sono guidati dall'agente di polizia Rick Grimes, risvegliatosi dal coma proprio
qualche settimana dopo gli eventi che hanno causato la catastrofe mondiale. Muovendosi di città in città, il
gruppo di sopravvissuti scopre presto che i morti viventi non sono l'unica minaccia per la loro vita: i veri "mostri",
spesso, sono proprio gli esseri umani che devono imparare a convivere in un ambiente ormai privo di regole, controlli ed
istituzioni.
